Daniel Everett: Endangered Languages, Lost Knowledge and the Future
The Pirahã, a remote Amazonian tribe with little outside contact, have attracted the attention of mainstream media, scientists, zen buddhists, professors of religion, mathematicians, philosophers and others because of their unusual confluence of values, language, and culture.

Now, after 20 years of high intellectual and physical adventure living among them, Dan Everett proposes a revolution in anthropology and linguistics: culture profoundly shapes language, even at the most fundamental level. What happens when a language-culture pairing like the Pirahãs' is lost?

The Pirahãs are not alone in their lessons and knowledge for all of us -- there are hundreds of endangered languages in the world -- but their example provides a remarkably clear example of alternative knowledge and ways of talking of importance to all of us as we ponder how we should try to build future lives.

Project Aims to Catalogue Endangered Languages
While there are nearly 7000 languages, only 83 are used by a majority of the world's population. Researchers say many of the rest are in danger of disappearing, warning that perhaps half the world's native languages will no longer exist by the end of the century. David Harrison with the Living Tongues Institute for Endangered Languages says language extinction is a crisis of unprecedented proportions and he is trying to do something about it. VOA's Paul Sisco has more.

Why should we protect endangered languages?
Why should we protect endangered languages? Dr Mark Turin responds with the passionate reply that language is essentially connected to culture; that it is a part of who we are. If we are not interested in protecting and preserving this then it would be nothing less than a moral travesty, the result of which would be perhaps the greatest indictment of our age as we sit back and do nothing about the death of languages all around us. Dr Mark Turin is here responding to a question posed at the 'Rare and Endangered Languages' symposium, chaired by Professor Tim Connell (here convening the questions following Dr Turin's lecture). The full lecture by Dr Turin, entitled 'Collect, Protect, Connect: Documenting the Voices of Vanishing Worlds', can be downloaded from the Gresham College website, as can the rest of the conference: www.gresham.ac.uk Dr Turin is Director of both the World Oral Literature Project and the Digital Himalaya Project: www.oralliterature.org www.digitalhimalaya.com GreshamCollege has been giving free public lectures since 1597. Science Nation - New Home Movies Resurrect Endangered American Indian Language
Tribal language educator Mary Hermes at the University of Minnesota, Duluth documents endangered languages. With support from the National Science Foundation, her team is working with elders to record, translate, transcribe, and annotate conversations. At the same time she is helping train new scholars, young and old, who want to speak the Ojibwe language. Her team is going beyond just translating text; they're creating videos of conversations among the elders. The videos, which will be a more engaging teaching aid for contemporary students, will become part of interactive multimedia learning modules. These modules may serve as a model for efforts to revitalize other endangered languages.
Indigenous Language and Emotions
Part 1 of an interview with David Nathan, director of the Endangered Languages Archive, London, England. Interviewer is Julian Lang of the Institute of Native Knowledge, Eureka, California. Nathan was visiting northwest California, his first visit to the west coast. He is originally from Melbourne, Australia. He speaks briefly of archiving languages, and the changes to that discipline, and also refers to the fact that learning one's language is humanity's very first archive. It served us for some 10000 years or more!
